If the pump makes a usual kind of noise, but does not pump water to the brewing unit, make sure to check the water hoses:

1) Water hoses can become clogged by scale.

2) In one case I found, the hose from volumeter to pump had come off from the pump. So the pump could only suck in ambient air instead of water.
