Sounds like water is siphoning back into the dishwasher.
Check that there's a high loop in the dishwasher's drain hose between where it comes out of the dishwasher and then loops up past the spigot in the drainpipe, (which should be above the P-Trap or S bend in the drainpipe) almost to under the sink cabinet top and then back down to connect to the drainpipe spigot.

If there's a garbage disposal unit in the drainpipe the dishwasher hose should connect to a spigot above the garbage disposal.

They show one where an air gap may be used but it depends on local requirements, but the loop in the drainpipe should go as high as what is shown in Fig.9 just not connecting to the air gap or above the sink top. This is t prevent siphoning from occurring
