Sounds like water is siphoning back into the dishwasher.
Check that there's a high loop in the dishwasher's drain hose between where it comes out of the dishwasher and then loops up past the spigot in the drainpipe, (which should be above the P-Trap or S bend in the drainpipe) almost to under the sink cabinet top and then back down to connect to the drainpipe spigot.
-If there's a garbage disposal unit in the drainpipe the dishwasher hose should connect to a spigot above the garbage disposal.
