Sounds like a faulty battery. I had one of these go out on me in a similar matter, I'd recommend trying to either DIY repair it or send it to a shop to be serviced. Personally, I wouldn't send it to Apple since they would likely tell you to buy a new one and only offer some form of data recovery.
