@fabledfemboy sure looks and sounds like a HDD issue. "I'd like to know if there's any way for me to potentially fix this without opening it" no, you can't. No matter what your plan is, you will have to open it up. Yes, it is an absolute "bear" to open it but really not impossible. Get a 1" putty knife from your closest hardware store and it can be done. The worst part that can happen is that you bend the clips on the backplate. Luckily the back covers are still sold for not a lot of money at many online stores. Follow this guide [guide|564] and you'll be okay.

The only pitfall is step 18. Do not use any pry tool etc to lift the lock on the battery connector. Those connectors are the achilles heel of the iPAd. those pop off the board easily and will require some board soldering. Use a paperclip and bend it in an L-shape. Then insert the smaller leg under the lock and gently pull it up. Then release the cable.
