Get the vehicle's OBDII port scanned with a suitable scantool to find out what DTC codes are being generated.
Knowing the DTC code will tell you what the problem is. Also once you know the code, then searching online for ''2016 Chevy Malibu (insert code)'' will usually help you to find what's causing the code to be generated and turn on the Check Engine Light.
If you're in the USA, major vehicle spare parts retail outlets e.g. AutoZone will do this for free apparently.
