I tried both insulating the board from the K wire such that the exposed wire is not able to touch any other components on the board, and disconnecting and reconnecting all the connectors attached to the optical drive. I'm not sure which fixed it but the disc drive is now working again! Thank you to @dadibrokeit and @oldturkey03 for your helpful answers.
