Posting this to help anyone facing the same issue. It turns out it was the blu ray drive that was the culprit, I sourced a compatible drive from eBay and replaced it without issue by using the guides here on the site. Working good as new :) the laser still works which can be sold to cover the cost of the new replacement part so win/win.
