With the phone turned on does it still give audible indications that calls/notification are there?
If so you could try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the screen and check if you can see any images at all. They will be very faint so trying in a darkened room may help to see them if they are there.
If they are there then this just signifies a backlight problem with the screen and doesn't help much unless when the screen is replaced that it also doesn't work either, due to a backlight problem on the systemboard and not in the screen itself.
