@thingummybob first you need to establish if it is the TV. Try it without the computer. Use a game console or a dvd/BR player etc to see if the volume works. Also, do try a different HDMI cable

This „why it changes from being fixable …..with changing requiring huge changes“ is just a progression of failure and consider it normal. Once you determine it is the TV, its time to take a look at the boards. The audio circuitry is on the main board. The audio IC is most likely what is failing. We would need to see the boards to assist you with that. There are not a lot of schematics gor these boards so we will have to improvise a lot
