-On different years they put the the magnets on different sides of the system. Take a magnet along both sides of the screen when you find the magnet the magnet in your hand will react. Now slowly run the magnet down the opposite side of the uppercase (keyboard part), from where you found the magnet in the upper clam shell. If that puts it to sleep you found your problem. Please let us know the results of this.

If the whole upper clam shell was replaced with a different year motherboard, that would explain the "why". Please let us know the results of this.
