I had a similar issue with my old iPhone 4s a while back. What worked for me was cleaning out the charging port carefully with a toothpick or compressed air to remove any dust or debris. Sometimes that can block the connection. Also, make sure you're using a high-quality cable because cheap ones can cause problems.
