turns out i have the phone backed up to a CD! so, i grabbed my old mac book (spent far to long looking for the HDD) and resorted it! it works fine now.

(the only reason i needed my mac book is theirs a glitch in windows so you cant restore an iPhone 2g, and in newer versions of mac OS they removed support for this old phone.)
