I don't know if I ever figured out what it is actually for (hard to do that when it's not on the schematic, just referenced),

I would think a [product|IF442-010|new charge port assembly|new_window=true] would be the way to go here. At least to rule it out. It's a pretty common part to go bad on any iPhone and commonly causes these restart problems.
