Thanks to all who have contributed answers, which helps to get an idea of what works, and for how long.  I wound up taking the whole case off my dehumidifier to see how bad the gunk growth was inside.  I found it was surprisingly clean in the drain pan above the L-shaped tube that comes out of the bottom of the pan.
