Without opening your display, you can just get a thunderbolt cord, plug it in to the back of the display and into your laptop. I just did this and it solved the problem. Wish the power cord/thunderbolt original wire worked, but replacing it is above my pay grade. Wish I realized this was possible about a year ago.
