With the phone on hold power then press restart. When the screen goes black press and hold power and volume down.

This may not work as it might ask for a pass code.

Connect the phone to a charger then try power and volume down. Some Samsung will not go to the recovery screen without being plugged in so not sure if yours might be the same but worth a try.
