That could absolutely be the problem. All the battery related data goes through that connector (the power goes through the bus underneath that the T5 screw holds down. If the little flap is missing, you can replace it with a new one. They just sort of pop out and pop into the connector. You might have an easier time finding a new connector though rather than just the flap. And you harvest the flap off the new connector.

In a pinch i would just see if reseating the cable, or taping it, or holding it down inside the connector and see if you can get it to be recognized.
