kenmore washer works properly only on cotton/sturdy setting

Kenmore washer 110.82874800 had a bad connection at the clip attached to the drive motor. I bypassed the blue and white wires and connected them directly. Now the only cycle that works correctly is the cotton/sturdy one. Why? Are there connections within the clip that are needed for it to work right?
