How can I keep from wiping out my music and video

My daughter allowed the battery of her 'pod to get very low.  Now it says that in order to even charge the battery she must reset the 'pod.  Doing this wipes the memory.  Is there any way to recharge the battery without resetting the unit and we don't have to wipe its memory?
