Rick Armand you did not tell us the exact year for your Dakota. Here is the HVAC part of a 2002 from the service manual [document|28377] and page 221 shows the mode door actuator removal.  I included the part of the Body section [document|28378] for the center console removal. Both mode control switches use electric actuators to control the mode doors.
