Ignition coil packs.  Each sparkplug has its own pack and when one starts to go you'll the miss, but generally no check engine light.

The DYI Fix:

a. ~$65 on Amazon for a set of four ignition packs

b. 10mm socket with a 4" extension

c. Torque wrench

d. About 40 minutes of time

Or the dealership can do it for about $600.
