So those are called grounding clips (that's Apple's terminology anyways). You likely didn't even break it off the cowling,
It is not actually physically attached at all. It just slides into place. But they do break VERY easily. Apple actually includes a spare one in the screw kit which comes with a new display for Apple Authorized Service Providers.
-I have noticed that removing the smaller screw first avoids this sort of damage. If you look closely at this picture you can see how it is supposed to look. You make be able to get by without it. But there it may cause issues for display function since it provides grounding for screen components.
