My guess is that there was something in between your casing and screen when you last closed it. You'll need a new screen. Replacing the display assembly isn't necessarily difficult, but you'll have to have to have the correct screw driver bits for the different screws you'll encounter and getting a new assembly won't be cheap either. I'd get a quote from Apple first, then look for a replacement and compare prices for parts and tools needed.
