I use the left Option key all day long every day. It stopped working suddenly yesterday in the middle of work. No drops, no spills, no crumbs. No other keys affected.
Pressing left Option while laptop is powered off does nothing. Pressing right Option key causes the laptop to boot.

I've looked under the keycaps and scissors of both left and right Option keys and saw nothing remarkable. Silver traces are unbroken leading up to the rubber plunger.

Is this a known problem? Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything I can do short of replacing the upper case? Remapping Capslock to Option is temporarily working but I'd like to restore the functionality my fingers have known for a decade.
