Black Screen on boot - May not be detecting external

Hello-
My macbook pro 15” from late 2011 is having the typical issue of black screen on boot: took it to apple and was told the display was busted so I’m now testing it with an external. The external monitor does not seem to be detected in this process (or maybe this is just the graphics card not working?) as the power light on the monitor stays orange and nothing ever seems to trigger anything on the screen.
Does anyone have any ideas? Or is the graphic card just blown?
***Edit:*** There is no light on the charging port when it’s plugged in, and when I press the power button the fans come on very high speeds.
