I had this problem. Constant switching off (by opening the battery case - the only way!) and on again coupled with illogical manhandling of the lens with occasional thumps eventually got the thing running with poor focus. Then I went to menu-settings-reset (to factory default)-ok and it now seems fine. Minutes away from binning, or home dismantle which would have had the same outcome!
