Hi .. can someone help lol

I normally connect my laptop to the TV via HDMI and a few weeks back after an update , it stopped doing that and would only do it through a wireless connection  … I then got a samsung monitor for use with my xbox and I tried to connect laptop to that using HDMI (monitor does have DVI port) and it still isnt having it but in the settings , the monitor is listed so the laptop is recognising it somewhere … Any ideas without taking laptop back before the update that ASUS have advised me to do … ? Thanks
