You don't say what the "source". This is very important as it determines which ports to use. You are possibly just plugging into the wrong RCA ports.
Here's a start. Download Technic service manual:
https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/technics/su-v7x.shtml
What do you mean by the term "direct input"?
This amp has:
* Tape2/VCR (2 ports - Playback & Rec Out)
* TV/Aux1
* Video/Aux2
* Cd
* Tuner
* Phono (MM/MC which is to do with the cartridge type on the turntable. ''MM phono'' preamps work with Moving Magnet (''MM'') cartridges. ''MC phono'' preamps work with Moving Coil (''MC'') cartridges )
* Tape 1
* Video (various in & outputs)
This link will take you to a photo of the ports:

+Much later. . .
+
+Of course why didn't I see this!
+
+You need to connect the left ouput to the left input and the right input to the right output, where the equalizer would have been.
+
+Who ever had the amp before you had an equalizer and didn't put ther jumpers back in when they sold it.
+
+99% sure this is the answer. It was!
