Display is turning off while I'm adjusting settings.

My battery is fully charged. I am in manual mode. When I push the info button to bring up the menu to change it it will shut off while I'm adjusting settings. I have been away from my camera a while and I've always use the auto settings so using manual is new to me but I don't think that the men you should shut off after half a second. I am extremely frustrated and not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
