First, check and see if all cables, connectors, etc. are properly conected. Second, your software may need updated, or the device it's connected to needs the same. Third, the hardware of the printer and device may have an issue. If the text reads, “Printer in error state", there's a bigger problem in the printer itself. Fourth, check paper/ink/cover closed/jammed. Outside of that, you might need a technician. Happy trails.
