After trying every step set forth in these comments, I finally put put new batteries into the Roku remote controller,

immediately the sound returned to my Vizio TV.   Incidentally, still had the ability to change channels and broadcasting streams while the old batteries were in the controller…thus there was no notice the batteries[br]

needed replacement
