How do I install 10.6 system upgrade?

I need to upgrade the system from 10.5.8 to 10.6.  No firewire so no target mode.  I hooked up my LaCie USB2/Firewire external drive and the profiler sees it but the DVD does not show up.  Start up disk in System Preferences does not show it.  Show CDs/DVD is on in the Finder preferences.  I don't really want to buy the Apple external drive just to do this, as my LaCie has been great for everything else.  Any ideas?
