Pure speculation: someting is shorted on the board and battery got drained in the time between test and customer pickup, that’s the only explanation I can think of. Now on to the troubleshooting: disconnect battery from the board that would start by itself at magsafe plugging in, if still alive. Amber light on magsafe is useless for any real info except the onewire protection circuit is probably working.
