Most Apple laptops (Dating back to the iBook) use a capacitor backed up by the main battery to hold date, time, and NVRAM (Apple techs tend to call the data/time/nvram combo "PRAM" or Parameter RAM), not a battery. Apple desktops, however, use actual batteries to do this.
