Has the drive ever been formated MS-DOS? If so you may never be able to use it in a Mac. If it is a new drive, it should work fine. Use disk utilities on your OS install and format, then partition it to 1 partition. You should then be able to install the system with no problems.

Just hold down the "C" key when booting to get to the disk drive.
