Opening fridge door causes noise and compressor to stop

Hi, I have a Hotpoint fridge freezer. If the compressor is running and I open the fridge door it makes a clunking noise, the light goes out and the compressor stops. The light comes back on a few seconds later and eventually the compressor kicks back in a few minutes later. Any ideas what might be wrong? I’ve taped up the light switch inside and the compressor doesn’t stop now when I open the door. I guess the extra power draw of the light coming on causes everything to shutdown.
