iPod shows apple logo while charging but does not turn on

so i have had my apple nano(3rd gen) for a while and it's probably been years since ive used it. I tried to charge it today but it would only show the apple logo(so im not quite sure if its charging or not).Ive tried plugging it into the wall and my macbook. When i plug it its unrecognizable by itunes and it wont reset or go into disk mode.When its not plugged it wont turn on at all not even during my many attempts at resetting it.If it were dead why does it show the apple logo.
