You guys….. the chip IS the real problem. Here are the facts taken from the Louis Rossman repar group.
#1. The GPU chip is the problem
#2. It’s NOT the solder attaching the chip to the board its an issue inside the GPU itself

So with that said do not get a GPU replacement with the same chip. It will fail again. That’s why most of my clients and friends who got their 2011 MBP replaced with Apple had the same issue years later.

Here is what I’ve done to at least make these Macs usable. Download: Mac Pro dGPU disabler. Follow the instructions. This has worked every dingle time for me if the issue is the GPU. keep in mind you will lose the ability to add a second monitor through the Thunderbolt port but all other Functionality of the port will still work. On macOS sierra you get to keep the ability to put your computer to sleep and wake up regularly. You also get to keep the ability to raise and lower your screen brightness. On macOS High Sierra you lose The ability to lower and raise your screen brightness. You also need to do some soldering to get your computer to wake up from sleep if you close the lid or if the screen goes to sleep.

The selected answer is great for this thread. If you don’t want to do all those steps though someone has made an app that does it all for you.
