Home Button Stopped working after opening device to change battery

The Back up and home button on the LCD screen Have Stopped working after opening device using Iopener and triangle picks. the cables and LCD panel seem to be ok.
Is this a common problem,does the sim card have anything to do with it, is there anything is particular to look for other than the two flex cables that get aligned into respective sockets.
