Hi Cheryl, follow these steps provided.
# Turn off the iPad and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button.
# While holding the Home Button, connect the USB cable to the device.
# Continue holding the Home button until the iTunes logo appears.
# If prompted with "The software on "iPad" needs to be restored to factory settings or updated", click Restore.
# I would suggest holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for 15 seconds before releasing the power button, but while still holding the Home button, connect the cable.
