just to add to my comment above..it would seem this is a pretty well known issue (probably the reason i held off updating for so long as it was on 4.1 too...) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2720908?start=15&tstart=0 you've jailbroken the phone? I'd try rolling back your ios to 3.1 to see if that helps.
