Can I replace the power button with an alternative?

My Xbox power button stopped working altogether and I have to use the disc tray button to turn it on or unplug it to turn it off (which if I plug it back in it will shut off after a few minutes), and I'm sick of dealing with this. I want to replace the power button, but I haven't found anything actually helpful, just complex boards. Can I cut the wires and attach a power toggle switch to the wires, or will that just break it further?
