These units sometimes use large capacitors (large in value not size) instead of batteries.  Open up the unit and look for a cylinder capacitor about the size of a stack of 10 dimes.  There should be a value on it of 1 Farad at 5V or something similar.  If you find it, replace it with a new one and that should resolve the problem.
