That's weird. I'm not sure what hard drive diagnostic software apple provide or are available for apple products, however there is a built in tool with Windows (that is if you have a Windows machine to hand). If you do then great, open up the 'Run' window by pressing the Windows icon + R or also by typing 'Run' in the search bar. Type in 'diskmgmt.msc' and press enter. It will bring you to a list of drives and a table looking GUI.

Right click your drive partition and then click 'properties'.

-From there, click the 'tools' tab and then where it says 'error checking', click 'check'.

This should check your drive's partition for any errors and hopefully fix them so that you can access your data.
However, if you do not have a Windows PC or Laptop to hand then you can try visiting [http://osxdaily.com/2012/05/24/check-hard-drive-health-mac-disk-utility/|this website.]
If your hard drive partition has errors then I myself could not tell you what you could do further. If your drive partition is checked and gets repaired then that's great! Good luck.
