Maintain power to Laptop when changing battery

I have a Sony VAIO SVF13N17PAB, and just received a replacement battery [VGP-BPS41] from the Sony preferred parts supplier.  Do I need to maintain power to the laptop when replacing the battery?  Also will I lose data/reset to factory settings when the battery is removed?  Thanks Scott
