Hi,
The metal jacket around the micro USB may have shorted out the +5VDC power supply to the USB port and also it may have affected the USB controller by connecting +5V to it as well on the USB data lines. I don't know why it would affect the rest of the laptop and not only the USB ports and USB controller though.
Perhaps the whole +5V supply in the laptop (derived from the battery (or the adapter) may have been affected.
The laptop has various power supply rails of different voltages in it.
-You may have to open it up and check if you can see any obvious signs of damage. Hopefully perhaps only an onboard fuse may have been blown.
