I can take movies but not photos, What did I do?

I used the camera to take vacation photos for 6-7 days. Them a bunch of feature icons came on the screen and I press the shutter and nothing happens. I switch to movie mode, press the shutter and get an mp4 file. What did I do??? no obvious damage, I didn't drop it....
