Just did a repair on a GE Profile that was growing huge amounts of ice. The flap where ice is dispensed was stuck open. I removed the touch pad control on the freezer door which revealed 4 screws. I removed these and when this unit came out the problem was obvious: the ice door solenoid was completely rusted and unable to move. Although a replacement was $35 I opted to remove the rusty unit, clean it thoroughly, paint it to inhibit future rust and reinstall. You can test the solenoid after installing it again before covering it up with the other parts: plug the refrigerator in and manually push the lever that is normally pushed by the glass you are filling.
