loosen power and the oil light came on

I  have a 02 v6 passat one day driven it .. it started loosen power and the oil light  came on ,so I drove it to the mechanic  and came back . They said engine  was locked up and have to have a new motor, but I can turn motor by hand so I know it's not locked up.. what could it b ?? I've heard of many things read many things anyone who had the problem email  me at Jongfella@gmail.com.. thank you
