Hi,
Your problem is that the "ground" connector" in the "female" socket of the extension cable is contacting the "microphone" connector in the Sony "male" plug and not the ground connector.

There are two main "wiring standards CTIA & OMTP" and depending on which particular one you have (and you might not know until you try it) and what you are trying to connect it to, this adapter will allow it to work for either one, unless you don't need it at all.
